The Connection Between Discipleship and Homemaking

The Connection Between Discipleship and Homemaking

“Marriage is the beautiful design of the Almighty, a great mystery of Christ and his church. So every married man should be gracious to his wife just as he is gracious to himself. And every wife should be tenderly devoted to her husband.” Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭32‬-‭33‬

God has established a way for people to live. Families are God’s design. Passages that speak on the qualifications of a minister address the importance of a home in order. In the context of a marriage Biblical Womanhood is a woman embracing God’s order for the home. The impact of the church in this world is cultivated in our homes. Whether we are single or married what we do behind the front door within the four walls of our home is what teaches our heart and mind. When we devote ourselves to the reading of God’s Word, prayer, worship, and godly fellowship within the home we train ourselves to live properly when we are outside the home.

A woman who devotes herself to obey Titus 2:3-5 displays God’s desire for a woman, a wife, a mom. We can teach, but our lives also speak. Since the majority of the people in the world around us are swaying opposite of what God commands, obedience is impactful because it is clearly seen as different.

Of course we want to tell others about Christ, but God has written instructions for us to show others what Christ love looks like. He established the family structure to represent His love. So much so that the mystery of marriage is connected to Christ and His bride the church. I can only touch the surface on how the practical living outlined is Scripture is one of the most tangible pursuits of ministry we can partake in.

Imagine your home being however many square feet of the earth marked out strictly for honoring God within that territory. Imagine your neighbor does the same. Imagine your neighborhood being filled with houses that are dedicated to the LORD. This is how we conquer. This is how we fill the earth and subdue it. Nothing is mundane or average about life when you have completely committed to doing life God’s way. When you commit to live with your spouse in an eternal covenant, the two of you have become God’s representatives of what marriage looks like when it’s done God’s way. When a husband goes out to work with a heart set to please the LORD and a wife stays home with the children with a heart set to please the LORD, the couple becomes a pop up version of the Scripture.

It’s not just about family for the sake of family it’s about experiencing and embodying what God designed a family to look like. Of course others may observe but more so when you grow in the fullness of this kind of obedience you are experiencing God’s love. How? When a husband loves a wife the way God commanded and shows forth that love daily in practical ways the wife is continuously nourished and filled with the love that God appointed for her to have. The same goes for a wife loving a husband. God is love. He commands love from both spouses. He commands love from children. He commands love for children. The whole thing will always come back to God’s original purpose to shower His love and glory on people.

We are inclined towards sinfulness and selfishness which is why we can’t simply do what feels right and equate that to obedience. We have to crucify our tendency to argue or complain about our desires not being met and instead posture ourselves to meet the needs of others. Isn’t that marriage and motherhood at its finest? Well isn’t that also what being a disciple is? That’s the whole point. Womanhood done God’s way is life lived practically in obedience to God’s commands.

You keeping a home clean, making sure your household is clothed and fed, budgeting your finances is all apart of the greater picture of making disciples. I just cannot explain it all here but let me highlight a few takeaways:

1.) Being a homemaker means being entrusted to turn the property you have been given to steward in to a place on this earth that God is revered.

2.) The godly love that flows in your family is appointed by God to fill your cup so that you are aware of how He loves you.

3.) Growth in Biblical Womanhood is growth in discipleship and evangelism as our lives flow more and more to the glory of God.

Take heart God has a plan to destroy the works of the devil even on the most basic levels. He is using your household to set aright what the enemy has distorted and tried to use for evil. As always God is using it for good.

“You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result — the survival of many people.”‭‭ Genesis‬ ‭50‬:‭20‬

“We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬
