The Woman at the Well
My desire for this post is to study the Bible together.
Let's read and talk about John 4:1-42.
Discussion
John 4:5-26
This is ministry. Jesus gets to the heart of the matter. Oh, how wonderful it is to be unraveled before the KING of kings.
In this account we see His gentleness. We see His wisdom. We see Him skillfully lead this precious woman in His sight out of deception and into truth.
Notice He does not accuse. He counsels. Indeed He is the Wonderful Counselor (Isaiah 9:6; 11:4). Proverbs says, "Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out." In this passage Jesus exposes the counsel in her heart (1 Corinthians 4:5) and then leads her to the Counselor (John 14:26).
"I have no husband..."
"It is the woman's own confession, "I have no husband". Jesus then addresses her past, but look at the words, "Right you are when you said, 'I have no husband,' 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you are living with is not your husband. 'This you said truthfully."
This statement does not condemn, it brings clarity to the woman at the well. It allows her to come to acknowledge that she is living with someone who by her own confession is not her husband.
Reflection
The cleansing begins with confession (1 John 2:8, 9)
God desires us to walk with Him, which requires agreement (Amos 3:3). We agree with God's standard of righteousness and holiness when we confess our sins. Confession and repentance are a way of life that cleanses us from sin (Proverbs 28:13).
It is our benefit to live with the proper posture in life that leads to purity in all that we are and do. We get there by fixing our eyes on the hope that our true worth is in being God's children and what we will become when we see Him. We will become glorious and pure just like He is. (1 John 3:1-3) (Matthew 5:8) (Titus 2:5) (2 Peter 3:1 "...stir up your pure minds").
Prayer
Father God,
In the Mighty Name of Jesus I ask that You will grant the reader and myself a heart that is united with You. Allow Your people to come to the awareness of how beautiful righteousness is and what You have allowed Your Son to be sacrificed for us to become. Grant us the grace to enter into Your throne room and be unraveled. Let our heart be open before You and the truth of our condition in Your sight be revealed. Allow us to confess and forsake sin. Let Your truth fortify us so that we are free from condemnation. May the new life in Christ be our pursuit. Refresh us in the hope of glory. I ask You to empower us to walk in the light of Your countenance in every area of our womanhood. Be glorified and magnified in our lives.
In Jesus Name
Amen
